Al Jaber holds a number of advisory positions where he provides counsel on global issues such as sustainability, climate change, and energy challenges.Most recently, Dr. Al Jaber led Masdar’s participation in the UAE’s successful bid to host the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Masdar City. He is now the Director General of the IRENA UAE Liaison office and is actively engaged in the establishment of the agency’s core functions and work plans. Dr. Katharina Kummer Peiry

Dr. Katharina Kummer Peiry heads the Secretariat of the Basel Convention since September 2007. A specialist in international environmental law and policy, she has worked on issues related to the Basel Convention since 1988, when she joined the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi to assist in the negotiation process of the Convention. 2008 thus marked her personal 20th anniversary with the Basel Convention.
Serving in the International Affairs Division of the Swiss Agency of Environment, and subsequently as Head of Section on Environmental Affairs in the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 1999, Katharina Kummer Peiry participated in various environmental negotiation processes and chaired negotiating groups on legal and institutional issues. In 2000, she founded a consulting firm specializing in international environmental policy and law, with which she worked until 2007. From 1999 to 2007, she also taught international environmental law at the Master level at the University of Berne (Switzerland).
Katharina Kummer Peiry holds a PhD in International Law from the University of London (United Kingdom) and a Master of Law from the University of Zurich (Switzerland), as well as a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Mediation from the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland). She has authored, and contributed to, numerous academic publications on international environmental law, international chemicals and waste management and other environmental issues. 1995 saw the publication of her book International Management of Hazardous Wastes: The Basel Convention and Related Legal Rules. It is still considered by many as the standard work on the Basel Convention. |

Mr. Buamim also served as the secretary general of the UAE oil and gas Human resources group, Lead in the Dubai Petroleum Management Incident Command System, member of International Human Resources Management, advisor to the Gulf Career Development Forum, Secretary General of the Dubai Government Oil Spill Task Force, the Crises Management Team of Dubai and the Region and Senior MENA region advisor- Global Energy. Walter Erdelen obtained a B.Sc. in Zoology, Botany, Genetics, Chemistry (1973) and an M.Sc. in Zoology, Botany, Genetics and Chemistry (1977) and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Zoology (1983) from the University of Munich, Germany. His postgraduate studies included four years of field research in India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. In 1993 he obtained his habilitation in Biogeography from Saarland University, Germany. Walter Erdelen started his professional career at the University of Munich, where he served as a Lecturer and Researcher from 1981 to 1988. During this period he carried out research at the Zoological Museum in Munich and the British Museum in London, as well as in Sri Lanka and India. He subsequently became a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the Institute of Bio-geography, Saarland University, from 1988 to 1993. He was promoted to the level of Associate Professor (1993-1995) before moving to the University of Würzburg, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Ecology and Biogeography (1995-1997). Concurrently, he also held the post of Director of the Ecological Field Station at the same University. He was also a Scientific Adviser (1991-1992) to the Commission of the European Communities for project proposals from Member States in the field of Science and Technology for Developing Countries.
Since 2001 Prof. Erdelen has been Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Sector covers a broad range of science-related activities and programmes, ranging from the basic sciences to science policy and sustainable development related issues. The Sector’s programmes include those of the Intergovernmental Commission (IOC), the International Hydrological Programme (IHP), the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP), the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme and the newly created International Basic Sciences Programme (IBSP). |

He has worked with UNEP since 1988, with the Freshwater Unit at the UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, the International Environment Technology Centre in Japan and the UNEP Regional Coordinating Unit for East Asian Seas in Thailand, prior to moving to Bahrain.
Besides his expertise in freshwater resources management, Habib during his long experience with UNEP has worked in coastal and marine management, wastewater management, environmental health and environmental assessment. His strength lies in the development of policy options and advice to the concerned governments on major environmental issues. He is also member of the United Nations Disaster Coordination Team. |

Dr. Martin Lees

Born in 1941, Martin Lees is a graduate in Mechanical Sciences from Cambridge University with a post-graduate Diploma in European Studies from the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. After some years as a manager in industry, he joined OECD where he managed programmes on Cooperation in Science and Technology and on Innovation in the Procedures and Structures of Government. In 1972, he was responsible for the design and launching of the "InterFutures Project" on the Future of the Advanced Industrial Societies in Harmony with that of the Developing Countries. He then served at the United Nations in several capacities, including Executive Director of the Financing System for Science and Technology for Development. In 1982, he was appointed Assistant Secretary General. During this period he was responsible for the establishment of the InterAction Council of former Heads of State and Government becoming its Executive Director. He has also been responsible, since 1983, for several high level programmes of International Cooperation with China, including an advisory programme for the leadership, "China and the World in the Nineties" from 1988 to 1998 and the establishment of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development of which he was a member for 15 years. He is now a Senior Adviser to the Chinese Government on Climate Change and other issues. From 1991–1996 he developed and implemented programmes of cooperation with the Newly Independent States of the Former Soviet Union as Director General of the International Committee for Economic Reform and Cooperation. Since 1995, he has been Moderator of the International Advisory Board of the Toyota Motor Corporation. From January 2001 to April 2005 he was Rector of the University for Peace of the United Nations in Costa Rica, guiding its revitalization and launching eight Masters programmes on issues of peace, security and sustainable development. He was elected to the post of Secretary General of the Club of Rome in September 2007 with effect from January 2008. |

Dr. Saleh holds a PhD., (1994) in Water & Environmental Resources Engineering from Concordia & McGill Universities, Montreal, Canada, with research interests in the areas of: Optimization, and Control-Volume Modeling of Groundwater Recharge and Surface/Subsurface water Flow in Arid to Semi Arid Lands. Since 1996, Dr. Saleh joined the United Nations University/International Network on Water, Environment, and Health (UNU/INWEH). As a Regional Coordinator for the Middle East & North Africa (MENA), Dr. Saleh employs the resources available through the network to conceive, develop, implement and manage programs and projects that address water problems in MENA region. Dr. Saleh takes a multi-disciplinary, ecosystem approach to water and watershed management. This approach fosters the application of appropriate technologies to meet water needs and assist environmental industries in developing countries to ensure the ongoing availability of affordable products and services.
Some of the Project and/or Programs Managed by Dr. Saleh where in the areas of: Environmental Impact Assessment of Groundwater; Capacity Building Programs for governmental water & environmental agencies; Groundwater pollution; Industrial Pollution Control; Integrated Watershed Management; Rural Environmental Management. Dr. Saleh won (for two consegative years) Young Canadian Researchers Award (for outstanding doctoral students), 1989-1992. The Source of the award was the International Development and Research Center (IDRC), Canada. Mr. Mohammad Souri (1947), has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Howard University, USA and has attended courses in Political Sciences and International Air and Marine Transportation.
Since 1984 he has been Chairman of the Board and Managing Director of National Iranian Tanker Company and also holds positions as Member of the Board of Steamship Mutual Underwriting Owners Association and Chairman of Arya Shipping Company.
Previously, Mr. Souri held positions as Member of the Board of National Iranian Oil Company (1984-1999); Chairman and Managing Director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line (1981-1985) and he was the Deputy Commerce Minister of Iran (1979-1980).
Mr. Souri is the author of "Endeavor for Tomorrow" and has translated the book of "Every street is Paved with Gold" written by Kim Woo Chung ex- Chairman of Daewoo Group and also the book entitled "Challenge" written by Mahathir Mohamed Malaysian prime minister in 1992 and 1999 respectively.
Numerous articles have been authored by Mr. Souri, which mainly give new ways for improvement of shipping industry of Iran and also present new insights on the international oil and as transportation. |

HE Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Awadi

Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Awadi has been active as a leader in health and environmental affairs in Kuwait as well as at the regional and international levels. Dr. Al-Awadi served Kuwait’s Minister of Public Health from 1975 to 1987 and as Minister of Planning from 1983 to 1990. From 1990 to 1991, he was the Minister of the State for Cabinet Affairs. In addition, he has held several positions at the national, regional and international levels. He was the Chairman of the Kuwait Environmental Protection Council from 1980 to 1987, Secretary General of Kuwait Red Crescent Society from 1996 to 1975 and Vice President since 1975. Chairman of the Executive Bureau of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health, 1976 to 1987; member of WHO Executive Board for two terms, 1966-69 and 1980-83; President of the WHO assembly during the year in which the Certificate of Eradication of Smallpox was signed; President of the Kuwait Society for Smoking and Cancer Prevention since its establishment in 1980. Since 1984, President of the Islamic Organisation for Medical Sciences. Since 1984 President of the Kuwait Kidney Transplant Society; and from 1981 onwards the Executive Secretary of the Regional Organisation for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) in Kuwait. Colonel Suleiman Mohammed Al Busaidy

Colonel Suleiman Mohammed Al Busaidy presently holds the position of Superintendent General of Pollution Control with the Ministry of Environment & Climate Affairs. He has held this position since 1997. He reports directly to His Excellency the Minister for all matters relating to pollution incidents on land and sea, and is the coordinator for the Oman National Oil Spill Contingency Plan. He is also involved in the implementation of government legislation regarding the protection of Oman’s Environment and is a member of several International and Regional Committees.
Preceding his civilian career, the Colonel served in His Majesty’s armed forces attaining the rank of Colonel and holds a degree in Military Strategy.
He has been awarded several decorations for his work for the environment, including the Euro-Arab cooperation Centre Award for Environmental Protection in 1997, and His Majesty the Sultans Environmental Award in 2001. |

Paul is founding Executive Director of the World Ocean Council - which brings together ocean industries to catalyze global leadership in addressing shared marine environmental issues in support of improved business operations and “Corporate Ocean Responsibility”. His experience ranges from working with the global industry associations and directors of UN agencies to working with fishers in small island villages. He has worked in over 30 countries, especially in Asia, the Pacific, Central America and West Africa. Paul works with industry associations, UN agencies, international NGOs and foundations on sustainable development and environmental management in the areas of oil/gas, shipping, fisheries, aquaculture, standards and certification. Past positions include: Deputy Director for the Global Marine and Coastal Program of IUCN - The World Conservation Union; founding Executive Director of the Marine Aquarium Council; Senior Officer in the Asia-Pacific Program of The Nature Conservancy; and Senior Program Officer of the UNEP South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP). Dr. Homam Albaroudi

Dr. Homam Albaroudi has a B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering from KAAU, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, M.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering from University of Missouri at Columbia and a Ph. D. degree from Oregon State University; his Ph.D. dissertation was on heat rejection system design for space nuclear rectors. After graduation, he accepted a post Doc position with his University in the Nuclear Engineering department for a year. After that, Dr. Albaroudi worked for few Fortune 100 companies in the USA as a consultant and R&D engineer such as ArvinMeritor and Visteon/Ford. He was also the manager of Advanced Product Development for Karmazin Product Corporation in Wyandot, Michigan.
Dr. Albaroudi has few patents and patent pending in engineering field, in addition to several technical papers. He is considered as an expert in fuel cells thermal management field. In 2005, he started a consulting and training company, Energative, in south east Michigan, USA, that is specialized in clean energy. Since Energative’s inception, it has successfully initiated and managed several educational events and seminars, conferences, and training courses in clean technology. Energative also offers consulting and business development services in the field of clean energy; it helped several international companies, involved in sustainable development, to expand their services and products to the Middle East. Dr. Albaroudi lives in southern California. |

Benno Böer, Ecological Sciences Advisor - UNESCO Arab Region, is a professional ecologist with international experience in the marine, coastal, and terrestrial environmental sciences. He studied Geology at the Philipps University in Marburg, Biology and Chemistry at the University of Osnabureck (B.Sc. and M.Sc.), and Physical Geography at the University of Paderborn, where he obtained his Ph.D. He came to Arabia in 1989 when he was working in a mangrove project in Abu Dhabi, with the United Arab Emirates University. He later joined ecosystem research and management projects in Saudi Arabia (with the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation Development, and the Senckenber Research Institute), in Sweihan (with the National Avian Research Cente), in Abu Dhabi (with the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency), before he joined the UNESCO Office in Doha, in 2000. |

Bin Towaih was responsible for developing the gas marketing department and leading the department planning and operations. He has been heavily involved in the development of various gas sales and operations agreements with different governments. In addition, he was working with Emirates General Petroleum Corporation (EMARAT) (1993-2002) as Terminal Superintendent. He was managing all the petroleum terminal operations. He has managed the first and the only LPG project operations and distribution terminals in Emarat.
Bin Towaih has been trained and successfully finished several leader and management programs locally and abroad. He gains a heavy background in Oil and Gas Operations, Marketing, Safety and Management.

He has done several projects in the area of electrical drives, power electronics, and hybrid electric vehicles. He served as the Head of School of Railway Engineering at IUST from 2000-2002.. He has directed several projects in the area of electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles. He also was a research associate in the Advanced Vehicle Systems Research Program in the department of Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University from 2002 to 2004. Furthermore, he successfully implemented the Hybrid Electric Vehicles on a Saypa mini bus which was funded by Ministry of Industry in Iran. He joined the Math and Science Department at Texas A&M at Qatar in January of 2007 and he is working on NPRP2 research project for Qatar Foundation. His research interests are mainly the control, electric drive train, power electronics, hybrid electric vehicles, CNG vehicles, alternative energy, and power systems. Khalid Abuleif

Mr. Khalid Abuleif studied Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering at the University of Houston where he obtained his BS in 1986 and MS in 1988. In 1989, he joined the presidency for Meteorology and Environment (PME) as an environmental engineer. During his stay in PME, he directed the Pollution Control Department, developed the institutional framework for the Ministerial Committee on Environment and participated actively in the international environmental processes including the negotiations of the climate change convention and the preparations for the Earth Summit. In 1997, Mr. Abuleif joined Saudi Aramco where he works now as an engineering Consultant in the Environmental Coordination Division / Environmental Protection Department. During his stay with Saudi Aramco, Khalid continued to follow the negotiations on international environmental agreements as a member of the Kingdom’s delegation to the climate change regime and the UN Commission for Sustainable Development. |

Dr. Ziad got his Ph.D in Civil Engineering (Environmental), 1988, Virginia Polytechnic & State University, Blacksburg VA – USA and became Associate Prof. 1994, and professor of civil Engineering , King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah 1999. He also served as Deputy Assistant to the President of PME (Presidency of Meteorology and Environment), KSA 2003 – 2005, Vice President, Meteorology and Environmental Protection Administration (MEPA), KSA, 2000 – 2002, Chairman of the Board of referee for Arab Environment Ministers Council Prize 2001-2004 and the chairman of the Board of Referee for the Kingdom prize for Env. Management 2003-2004. He is current Secretary General, PERSGA (An Intergovernmental Organization for the Conservation of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden)
Dr. Ziad was nominated as the Spokesman on behalf of the Arab Group in the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), Johannesburg, 2002 and was elected as a member of the Bureau of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for Asia Region. Dr. Ziad has prepared the National Environmental Law in Saudi Arabia and the State of the Environment 2000 and has published 36 refereed Journal paper and participated in many conferences and international consultancies (UNEP and WHO). |

Mike Lumley is General Manager -Shell Marine Products (SMP) for the Mediterranean Africa, Middle East & South Asia (MAMESA). Holding an MBA degree from Henley, Mike initially graduated as a Bachelor of Science in Politics and Economics and set out to join the Shell Group early in his career in his native UK.
Mike has an extensive experience in Shell having worked in a variety of sales, marketing and trading roles in a career spanning over 20 years. He has spent much of the last 15 years working overseas in various assignments. These have included managing a refinery processing deal at the Petit Couronne refinery in France in the early 90s; establishing Shell's Lubricants marketing businesses in the three Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) from 1994 to 1997; and leading the Central European Commercial Sales team from its base in Poland between 1998 and 2000.
Mike is now in his second assignment in the UAE, having originally come to Dubai in 2001 as Aviation General Manager for the Middle East and South Asia region. In between these two assignments, Mike spent three years back in UK head office as Shell Aviation's Global Marketing Manager for the rapidly growing low cost and regional airline segment.
Mike became Shell Marine Products' Regional General Manager for MAMESA in the second half of 2007. His current responsibilities include sales of fuels, lubricants and associated services to a range of customers, varying from large container and tanker fleets to small coastal fishing operations. |

Dr. Hussein Harahsheh is a Geo-information Scientist working at Global Scan Technologies, and holding the position of General Manager. He was appointed as assistant Professor at United Arab Emirates University for 3 years, and he started his carrier, in 1986, as a research scientist and projects manager at the Royal Jordanian Geographic Center for 8 years, and sense he worked as project Director and principal investigator of several research and applied projects in the field of remote sensing and GIS application toward natural resources.
Dr. Harahsheh holds a diploma of Civil Engineering from the National School of Public Works “ENTPE”/ Lyon-France in 1986, and received his PhD on “Remote Sensing and GIS applications” from Chiba University/ Chiba-Japan in 2000.
